I just took that off, and I didn't see a thermostat in there (isn't that where it would be? the plastic neck on the side?). If he wasn't running a thermostat it probably got REALLY hot, and maybe that's just a water jacket that expanded and busted I hope. He showed me the oil that came out of it when it messed up; it was milky when he stirred it up.
